Lost In The Stars

~ Piano ballad with vocal ~ 2021-03-16

Musings on the creative process

Notes / Back story

This song was written by Kendall Van Shaar. He said he heard it in a dream one night and wrote it down as soon as he woke up, with the melody and a basic accompaniment. Then he sent me a copy and I added some complexity and variation. Then he came over to my house where we recorded his vocal and tweaked the accompaniment to his liking.

Lyrics

V1
Writing a song is like
Flipping some paint on a page
Step back and squint your eyes
Look at the things that you've made.

Hundreds of stars!
A view of the heavens!
See where you are?
See where you have been?

V2
And while we have the brush
Let's paint a happy little tree.
Through grass a river rush
Flowing and beautiful and free.

Under those Stars
A view of the Heavens
See where you are?
See where you have been?

V3
Then staring long at that
Asking if you should make more.
Wondering if all those stars
Is what this canvas is for.

Hundreds of stars!
A view of the heavens!
See where you are?
See where you have been?

V4
Then when you drop your brush
You'll have to admit when it's done.
Put in a final touch
And hope that your critics have fun.

Then start anew!
Painting, creating!
See how you grew
From this thing you're making

Hundreds of stars!
A view of the heavens!
See where you are?
See where you have been?
