A Cry For Love: Where It Wants To Be
~ musical theater, soft rock ballad ~ 2007-07-10
Written for the original musical, A Cry For Love, based on the life of Amedeo Modigliani.
Sometimes, in spite of all logic, the heart wants what the heart wants. This is a duet between Modi and Jeanne.
This song falls in the play where Modi and Jeanne first meet. Jeanne has admired but been haunted by Modi's art; through the images and sculptures she understands and loves him, in spite of her reservations.
Female vocals by Laurie Gowin.
JEANNE
Faces of pain and figures of desire
What is it in these images that sets my soul on fire
His heart is full of passion, but constricted by fear
I want to know him in and out and always hold him near
What does he need that I could give to take away the hurt?
Could my love be enough to raise his spirits from the dirt?
God said, "Lose your life in others if to me you would be true;"
I see a need and know my place, yes this is something I can do.
And this could be just what my heart wants;
Yes, this could be just where my heart longs to be.
MODI
Who is this, and why is she acting this way?
I feel her eyes are on me, yet she never meets my gaze.
Should I remember her from somewhere? Have we met? I cannot tell
The way she smiles and looks away, it seems she knows me well
I have felt the lust of women often times enough before
To know when I am feeling something different; something more
She's crashing through my walls; like nothing I had ever planned.
Not alarming, but disarming, and defenseless here I stand.
And this could be just what my heart wants;
Yes, this could be just where my heart longs to be.
(musical interlude as they dance)
JEANNE
My heart,
My heart,
Is where it wants to be-
MODI
My heart,
My heart,
Is where it wants to be-
JEANNE
Yes I think my heart is where it wants;
MODI
I think my heart is where it wants to be.
JEANNE
But wait! I must be crazy if I'd spend my time on this
How fast and how far would I fall with just a simple kiss?
All my life I have been told I should resist and should refrain
The wildness in his eyes attracts me like I can't explain
I long to be part of his art; part of his heart; to be his muse
If that is a rebellion, well then that is what I choose
I'll make myself a citizen of his unruly land
Drawn by his deepest need for me; for me to understand.
My heart,
My heart,
Wants only to be needed
My heart,
My heart,
I only need a place for my heart
My heart,
My heart,
Goes only where it's wanted
My heart,
My heart,
Is where it wants to be-
JEANNE: And my heart is where it wants;
MODI: Yes my heart is where it wants;
TOGETHER: My heart is where it wants to be.
