Dust

~ Musical Theater ~ 2016-11-30

The thoughts of Mormon and Moroni as they think on the destruction of their civilization and send a warning message to the future. Based on the account from the Book of Mormon.

Notes / Back story

I wrote this song to go along with my Sunday School lesson. While pondering on the topic, I became interested in the way dust is used in the Book of Mormon. Of course there are references to people returning to the dust when they die, but there are also references to us being created from the dust, and we are told to humble ourselves to the dust, and that those who repented of their sins viewed themselves as less than the dust.

But, we are also told numerous times that the records recorded by these ancient civilizations will one day whisper from the dust, or cry from the dust, to teach us and warn us in these last days.

So, I sang this song along with teaching the lesson last Sunday and it went over really well. Maybe you can use it your lesson sometime as well!

Maybe one day I'll write a musical about the Book of Mormon and this will be the big closing number. I currently have, I dunno, maybe half a dozen BOM songs scattered around my site here. I just need a way to put them all together.

Lyrics

Dust
Dust
Dust
Turned to dust

V1
We were once a great people
We had everything going for us
Living in this promised land
In the light of the everlasting gospel

We lived in peace one with another
We had all things common among us
There was no poverty, no war
Every man loved his neighbor and now it's all

Dust
Dust
Dust
brought low in the dust

V2
How did it happen?
We became prideful
We set our hearts on riches
And the vain things of the world

We began wearing costly apparel
And thought of ourselves as better than our neighbor
We began to neglect the commandments of God
And forgot this one lesson; that all flesh is made from the

Dust
Dust
Dust
From the dust

BRIDGE

Oh, Oh, my people
Oh, Oh, my people
Oh, Oh, my fair ones

How is it that ye could have fallen?
How is it that ye could have gone?
How could ye have slaughtered each other
And left me here weeping alone in your

Dust
your dust
Dust
In your dust

If ye will keep the commandments
God will prosper you in the land.
If ye keep not His commandments
You shall be cut down, cut off,
and ye will sleep in the dust.

(instrumental)

I speak as if ye were present
For God hath shown you unto me
and I know all of your doings
The future plain to see.

This will be written and saved in the earth
To one day come forth when it can be of worth
So now to the ground, all our words we entrust
That one day you'll hear us; a whisper, a cry from the

Dust
We cry from the dust
Dust
We cry from the dust

Dust
We cry from the dust
From the dust
And hear us, you must

Dust
We cry from the dust
Dust
We cry from the dust
